WOODBLOCK

THE MEDIUM & ITS HISTORY

Woodblock is a relief-printing process: ink is carried on the raised surface of a wooden block carved on the plank (side grain) of the wood. It has a long history in East Asian book and image printing, and later in European and contemporary art.

HOW IT IS MADE

  1. Draw the design on a wooden block.
  2. Carve away areas that should not print.
  3. Roll ink onto the raised surface.
  4. Press paper against the block and lift the impression.

AS A COLLECTOR

Look for the relationship between wood grain, carved marks and the printed image.
